From the Mailbag

MIA emailed me to ask if there is any way to permanently opt out of telemarketing calls. Yes there is! Several years ago, the U.S. federal government created the National Do Not Call Registry. You can register all of your phone number(s) there to permanently block sales calls. However, you will still receive calls for political, charitable, debt collection, informational, and telephone survey purposes as they are exempt from the law.

AYDEN wants to know whether it Is safe to use the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) on his Linksys router. I strongly recommend against this. WPS is highly susceptible to brute force attacks, which makes it very insecure. You should disable it ASAP.

BUTCH AND RHONDA, you can backup multiple computers to a single drive. First, purchase a license for Drive Snapshot (€39 = $43.71). Next, get yourselves a high-capacity USB hard drive like this one - Western Digital Elements USB 3.0 2TB Hard Drive ($74.43 with FREE shipping). Finally, create separate folders on the hard drive for each computer, and then create separate folders inside each of those named with the date of the backup (e.g. 20170520). This makes it very easy to manage all of the backups, as you can see which is which at a glance.

Further, I recommend that you backup each computer at least once per week and keep no less than four backups on the hard drive for each computer. In the event of an emergency, this will allow to restore or "roll back" up to a month if necessary. Following these steps will cover you for on site backup. However, I also recommend that you subscribe to a cloud backup service like Carbonite. Backing up to a USB hard drive is OK until the building burns down or a flood washes everything away.
