From the Mailbag

JOHANNA emailed me asking for an ad blocker recommendation. I really like uBlock Origin, even though the creators do not advertise it as strictly an ad blocker. It is available as an add-on or extension for both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, which was the other criteria that Johanna asked for.

AIDEN emailed me asking how he can help clean up his Mom's computer after she got tricked by a remote access scam. They called her pretending to be "Microsoft Consumer Technical Support" and she paid them $199 and gave them full access to her computer! Aiden, you have to assume that the computer is completely compromised at this point. Back up all of Mom's data, format the hard drive, reinstall Windows, and then restore her data.

If you did not live so far away, I would be happy to schedule a site visit to help Mom out. However, you seem fairly tech-savvy and I think you can handle this. Do not forget to contact Mom's credit card company! Ask them to reverse the charge and issue her a new card ASAP.

MICHAEL is looking for a cell phone recommendation. He has an old Samsung Galaxy J3 that is on its last leg and he wants to replace it for less than $200. Michael, take a look at the new Samsung Galaxy A51. You are on Verizon, so it will be a $199 upgrade (i.e. $8.29 per month x 24 months). As far as I am concerned, the A51 is the right phone for a whole lot of people. Be sure to let me know how you make out.
